Getting the Best Rate

MethodTypical FeeRating
Local ATM withdrawal1-3% + flat fee★★★★ — best exchange rate, some fees
Credit card (no FTF)0%★★★★★ — Visa/Mastercard wholesale rate, no markup
Airport exchange kiosk5-15%★ — worst rates, high fees — avoid
Hotel exchange7-15%★ — slightly worse than airport, avoid

ATM Strategy

RuleWhy
ALWAYS decline conversionThe ATM offers its own exchange rate — it's always worse. Choose local currency.
Withdraw larger amountsFlat ATM fees hurt less on €300 than €50. Fewer withdrawals = fewer fees.
Use bank ATMsAvoid stand-alone ATMs in convenience stores — higher fees, skimming risk

Best Travel Cards

FeatureLook For
No foreign transaction feeEssential — saves 3% on every purchase. Chase Sapphire, Capital One, Revolut
ATM fee reimbursementCharles Schwab debit card refunds ALL ATM fees worldwide
Notify your bankMany banks no longer require travel notices, but check — frozen cards abroad = nightmare
Pro Tip: Never accept Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC). When a terminal asks 'Pay in USD or local currency?' ALWAYS choose local currency. DCC adds 3-8% markup disguised as 'convenience.' Visa/Mastercard's wholesale rate is almost free.
